Making child arrangements work: a practical guide for separating parents

Beyond the paperwork: how to set up handovers, communication and holidays that actually work for children and both parents.

Whether you have a Child Arrangements Order or an informal parenting plan, the day-to-day is what actually matters to your children. Research consistently shows outcomes are driven by conflict levels between parents - not the specific split of time.

Handovers

  • Keep them brief and low-drama. School or nursery is often the calmest handover point.
  • Agree who is responsible for uniform, kit and bags - write it down.
  • Don't discuss adult issues in front of the children at handover.

Communication between parents

  • Keep it business-like: short, factual, in writing where possible.
  • Use a dedicated app (OurFamilyWizard, 2houses, or a shared calendar) for schedules and expenses.
  • Agree a response window (e.g. within 24 hours for non-urgent matters).

Holidays and special days

The most common source of dispute. Get ahead of it by agreeing at the start of each year: school holidays alternate or split; birthdays follow a pattern; Christmas/Eid/Diwali rotate. Book time off early and share dates in writing.

When things slip

  1. Talk directly first - most issues are logistics, not principle.
  2. Try family mediation before anything more formal.
  3. Consider a Child Arrangements Order only if mediation fails or safety is a concern.

Frequently asked questions

How much time should each parent get?

There is no fixed rule. Courts start from the presumption that involvement of both parents furthers the child's welfare, then look at what works practically.

Do we need a court order?

No. Most separated parents never get one. A written parenting plan is enough if you can co-operate.
